NATIONAL LONG-TERM CARE WORKFORCE NETWORK

The CSG National Long-Term Care Workforce Network (2023-24) is comprised of state legislative and executive branch officials from around the country, academic researchers, subject matter experts and representatives from a variety of stakeholder groups in the long-term care space. In 2023 and 2024, the network convened multiple times to discuss shared goals and strategies for addressing long-term care workforce challenges. Topics included:

  • The work of the Moving Forward Nursing Home Quality Coalition
  • The dementia care workforce
  • The nursing home clinician workforce
  • The home care workforce
  • How states are building and expanding career pathways for those in long-term care
  • Workforce development initiatives
  • Workforce challenges and opportunities explored by state affiliates of the American Health Care Association and National Center for Assisted Living
  • State and local strategies to support family caregivers
  • State spending for home and community-based services with funds from the American Rescue Plan Act
  • Multisector plans for aging

The network’s discussions expanded on a number of the state strategies to support long-term care workers identified in the CSG Long-Term Care Policy Guide, including:

  • Enhancing training and education
  • Facilitating career advancement, including the development of career ladders and lattices
  • Expanding the pipeline of potential workers through more aggressive recruitment and retention initiatives
  • Improving data collection
  • Identifying state strategies to support informal family caregivers
