The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has determined that COVID-19 spreads between people in close contact with each other. Accordingly, Education Week reports that more than 124,000 schools nationwide closed in Spring 2020 to protect students and staff, sending 55.1 million U.S. students home. The decision hit kids in underserved communities hardest; many of them are at risk of falling behind because they do not have devices or reliable internet service at home to access virtual classrooms and learning programs. These tools are key to keeping up with today’s digital world. And in times like this, when traditional classroom learning is not an option, they are a necessity.

CSG Associates in Action: Ancestry Uses DNA Database For COVID-19 Research Project

Ancestry, a CSG Associate, is working to gain a deeper understanding of COVID-19 by searching for a genomic component to how people contract and respond to the disease. This information may be useful in the global effort to develop treatments, preventatives or vaccines for the disease.

Factors Contributing to the Spread of COVID-19 in Rural Communities

What began as a problem in concentrated in urban areas has now shifted to include non-metro areas as well. COVID-19 has had a serious impact on rural communities. Early cases of the virus popped up in mostly urban areas due to dense population, but as the numbers in urban areas like New York and Detroit begin to decline, outbreaks in rural communities are increasing.

Seattle was one of the first outbreak hotspots in the U.S. of the novel coronavirus in early March. Microsoft, a CSG Associate member, calls the region home and quickly mobilized its resources, people and innovations to battle COVID-19 in its home state, across the country and throughout the world. These efforts include the development of mapping portals to track the virus, support for researchers seeking solutions to the health crisis, utilization of technology to monitor ICU patients and providing technology accessibility to Americans working from home.

Can Tech Help Re-Open the States?

Contact tracing is a pillar in disease control that has been around for decades and is commonly used for a number of infections. In light of COVID-19, a few states have moved toward using technology to help monitor and track residents who choose to download their apps and opt-in. States that have implemented the voluntary cellphone tracking apps or that have contracted with developers to help build apps see this as a way to help build confidence and reopen their economies. Research has shown that so far, these contract tracing apps are off to a slow start in states. South Dakota has the highest participation rate — about 2% of residents have the state’s app on their phones.
