To learn more, visit web.csg.org\/capitol-ideas\/capitol-ideas-presents<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n View the recorded session.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n With every election cycle, new members of the federal and state governments must work to find a balance and relationship that ultimately serves the constituent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n In the March 3 \u201cCSG Capitol Ideas Presents: Perspectives on the State\/Federal Relationship,\u201d state legislators were able to discuss to the evolving needs of states and constituents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cOne of the things we do emphasize is the strength of the states and the idea of federalism,\u201d said Wisconsin Senator and CSG 2021 National Chair, Joan Ballweg. \u201cThe relationship between states and the federal government depends on several factors\u2026Overall, government is established to serve their constituents.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Moderator and CSG Executive Director David Adkins posed several questions to the panel of legislators including how they view the relationship of state and federal government and what kind of frustrations they find and partnerships they have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cThe federal government plays a significant role in New Hampshire. A third of our operating budget is federal money,\u201d said New Hampshire Senator and CSG Immediate Past National Chair, Lou D\u2019Allesandro. \u201cStates have to function in a reasonable, responsible manner. The federal picture is very important to us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n D\u2019Allesandro pointed to the efforts of the Federal government with the Interstate Highway Program and gas taxes that have led to the development and growth of the states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cAs long as we can look at things as one supporting another and maintain a good relationship with our co-equals at the national level, I think everything works well,\u201d he said. \u201cWe all get the benefit of this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n Redistricting of congressional lines was a hot topic of discussion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cWashington has had a redistricting commission\u2026the congressional delegation is very aware of it and works closely with us,\u201d said Washington Senator and CSG National Chair-Elect Sam Hunt. \u201cThe difference is, we have a five-member redistricting commission. Each caucus of the legislature appoints one member and those four hire, or elect, a nonvoting chair. So whatever redistricting comes out has to have three votes, so it has to be bipartisan.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n More information on the next Capitol Ideas Presents will be available in coming months.
