Celebrating the Month of the Military Child: Georgia Rep. Mike Glanton

In celebration of the Month of the Military Child, CSG members who are in the military and those who are military children are sharing their thoughts on the significant role military-connected kids play in our communities. Hear from Georgia state Rep. Mike Glanton:

“As the parent of military children and grandchildren, it certainly takes a unique commitment to raise children in the military while balancing your responsibilities and duties to the military duties. It is often very difficult balancing the two understanding the military mission in most cases will have priority over family concerns. However, the military does require all personnel to have a “family support plan” in place at all times in the event of deployments. The support plan includes command support, other military spouses and family members from home. Although the support plan is in place, it cannot replace missed birthdays, holidays, graduations and births of your children. I have missed occurrences such as my child’s first teeth, first steps and first day of school.

“As a soldier, I missed many special moments and milestones with my children. Raising a child while in the military becomes even more challenging when you have a child with “special needs” or one who requires on-going medical attention and hospital visits. My personal experiences were tempered by having a strong, supportive spouse who made the necessary sacrifices to keep the family together during my multiple deployments and transitions overseas. I wish civilian parents understood the true value in having your children and family together during special occasions and occurrences.

“Lastly, serving in the military while raising children has made me a stronger parent who appreciates the time and opportunity to share in special family moments and accomplishments of my children and grandchildren no matter how small. Thank you for honoring the military child.”
