Calculating Corrections Costs: The High Stakes of Probation and Parole

Event Briefing

Summary

To mark the release of our new Course Corrections Cost Calculator, The Council of State Governments (CSG) Justice Center will host a live event on Thursday, March 11, 2021. The event will be broadcast through our new Vimeo Live platform and simulcast on social media channels. Viewers will be invited to participate in a back-channel discussion during the event via the event’s hashtag, #ReentryMatters.

The event will include a brief walkthrough of the tool itself, detailing how to use it, how our team hopes it will be leveraged in states, and the methodology used to formulate the calculator’s projections. That segment will be followed by a panel discussion with a small collection of state corrections officials and policymakers to discuss their states’ experiences with probation and parole and how the Cost Calculator can help with their improvement efforts. We will also use this event to build buzz for our upcoming Confined and Costly report release.

Description: Parole and probation violations have an outsized effect on state prison populations. The Course Corrections Cost Calculator uses data, soon to be released in our annual Confined and Costly report, to show how changes in probation and parole outcomes can impact a state’s prison population and costs.

The CSG Justice Center collected these data from individual states in partnership with the Correctional Leaders Association and Arnold Ventures and jointly created the Cost Calculator with Recidiviz.

This event will bring together experts from across the U.S. to explore the critical challenge states face with their probation and parole operation, the impact revocations are having on prison admissions and overall populations, and individual successes that have already demonstrated the kind of progress that can be projected in the Cost Calculator.

The event is free and open to the public via livestream, accessible at csgjusticecenter.org/live and on Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. Viewers can join the conversation via #ReentryMatters.
