Teacher Licensure: Interstate Compacts — Lessons from Other Professions

Currently, seven professions utilize interstate compacts to provide license portability for their practitioners. Each interstate compact was uniquely developed to the fit needs of that profession. However, lessons can be learned from these professions that will benefit teachers as the education community explores options for developing true reciprocity. Hear from administrators of the Nurse Licensure Compact, Physical Therapy Compact and Interstate Medical Licensure Compact as they explain how their compacts work and highlight the different models of license reciprocity that could be utilized by the education profession.

Interstate Compacts Town Hall

This session will explore the evolving use of interstate compacts in America. Our panel of experts will discuss the utility of compacts throughout American history and their continuing relevance to public policy in the 21st century. Panelists will discuss how interstate compacts benefit states and can reinvigorate the priorities of states in our federal system, and how courts favorably treat interstate cooperation through compacts.

Compacts and Universal Licensure

Interstate compacts and universal licensure recognition policies have been at the forefront of the policy innovations states are utilizing to improve workforce mobility, reduce barriers to employment, increase access to licensed services and strengthen state resiliencies. While these policies may share similar policy goals, their structure and impact on licensed workers have distinct qualities. Through a moderated panel discussion, this session will explore the similarities and differences between the policy models and equip attendees with the knowledge to assess how their state may benefit.

This fourth and final webinar in the Teacher Licensure Series will explore best practices for states in building resilient models of teacher licensure that attract and retain highly qualified educators while allowing for interstate mobility. Speakers will share research on current state models of licensure, their strengths and weaknesses and how they permit or impede interstate mobility. Speakers will explore how an interstate compact for teacher licensure can help states attract and retain talent, combat teacher shortages, leverage talent from other states and provide greater interstate mobility for teachers.
